Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is moderation and what service will the Moderation Coordinator provide my school?
Simply put, moderation is a way to double-check a teacher's marking of an assessment component (generally internal assessments). After a teacher within the school has marked a set of work, the Moderation Coordinator will select a sample to be moderated.
Q: Why should my school moderate work?
For schools with only one subject teacher (and particularly new schools), this is a good way for the teacher to adjust his or her marking according to the IB's assessment criteria and expectations. For schools who would like detailed advice on marking, the full moderator's report (see the enhanced and professional services) will provide additional guidance for improving the quality of candidates' work, as well as the accuracy of teachers' marking.
Q: Who will be marking the moderation sample?
The Moderation Coordinator only works with experienced subject area experts whose marking has long been in line with other IB examiners' marks. All moderators' work is quality checked before being sent back to the school.
Q: How many samples will be selected for each subject?
The Moderation Coordinator works with the same sample sizes as the IB. These sizes vary according to the number of candidates entered by the school for a particular subject:
